Halloween is just a couple weeks away. Decorations are more elaborate and realistic every year. I think that we should have a contest to showcase some of the best in two categories, Most Elaborate and Most Realistic/Scary. Now, I am easily spooked. Getting scared was fun when I was growing up. I grew up when Punkins were carved into jack-o-lanterns and lit with candles. Ghost were white sheets hung from trees. Every year an older couple in Shady Point would go all out. She would hand out caramel popcorn balls and he would sit real still in the lawn chair by the front door, dressed up as a scarecrow and jump out at the kids as they hollered “Trick or treat”. It “skeert” me every Halloween until I was driving age or 14 or so. Life was simpler back then.
Now the decorations in yards have strobe lights, bluetooth Boo’s, scenes from movies and them fan-driven, 10ft very realistic spooks and goblins that jump and dance. This is my public service announcement. I was coming off Cavanal just after dark last week. Enjoyed a supper and a visit with the Dunn’s. I cruised around a corner and was caught off guard by a Dragon! I know now that it was one of those blow-up thangs, but for a second, I was sure that I was fixing to be supper for it. Keep in mind that I grew up watching all the Godzilla movies. And they caused me to have nightmares. But after I gathered my wits and caught my breath, I laughed out loud. My advice is take a tour just after sundown and enjoy the decorations around the Grade school (Poteau Primary Elementary School) . Hughes dr. and Michelle dr. are favorites every year. Ya just can’t find a good home-made Popcorn ball anymore.

with Country Express. Sat. 29th, Spiro Eagles with “Make It a Double”- I-40 Dance and Music Hall with “The Lawman” band- Dawn’s Diner/Red Oak with “Big Marty and the Dirty Dogs”- Crocky’s Cafe/Hackett with “The Bynum Project”- Ed and Linda’s 128 Bar and Grill with “Live Wire/ft. Felisha McKenzie”. More info next Tuesday. On Tues. 25th at the Lowery Museum, downtown Poteau, The Al Grzech Trio will bring the 2nd in a series of The History of Jazz. The music traces Jazz thru the years and its progression of influence in popular music. The Trio, Al/piano, Dave Hoffpauir/guitar and Dale Fraze Sr./drums will play songs from the 40’s and 50’s with a demonstration of different styles and progressions. Informative while being very entertaining. Downbeat is at 6 pm.
Live Music this week! The I-40 Dance and Music Hall will have “The Lawman” playing music for the line-dancers and two-steppers EVERY Thursday at 7 pm. “Earl Hearon and the Sound of Country” will be there for the Sat. Nite dance starting at 7 pm also.
Crocky’s Cafe/Hackett has the only regular Praise and Worship -Friday Night Fire- starting at 7pm. This Friday 21st, “Reborn” will be on stage. Great family friendly event for the supper crowd. “Grannie’s Nightmare” will be R&R on Sat. 22nd at 7 pm. They play the very best in Classic Rock. Good food-Great Music at Crocky’s. Awesome lineup at Dawn’s Diner/Red Oak this week. “59 South” will play on Thursday 20th. First time for “The Sons of Turner” on Fri. 21st. This Father/son duo are a treat. Then on Sat 22nd, “The Stagemasters” will make another appearance. Three great nights of music at Dawn’s. Music starts a lil’ after 6 pm. Get there early for a seat at the table.
“Oklahoma Moon” will host The Showtime Jamboree and this month’s feature guest will be “Lori J. Rose”. She is a very talented singer and has a great show. It will be at the Pocola Senior Citizen’s Center. Then
the band takes their show to Tahlequah at the Kroner and Baer Pub. Live music with a big selection of craft beer. Music starts at 7 pm both nights.
“The Wright Family” will host a night of Gospel music on Sat 22nd. This will be the last front porch singing of this season. Their farm is beautifully decorated for the Fall. They will have two featured guests, The Alverson’s and The Country Cousins. It is a free, family friendly event. It is located in Shady Point bout a half mile North of the EZ Mart on the hwy. Watch for signs, listen for music, it is easy to find. Bring a lawn chair. It starts at 6 pm.
