The Spiro School Foundation for Excellence in Education held their annual Academic All-Star Banquet last week on Thursday, April 20, 2023. They recognized 11 senior, 12 junior, and 21 sophomore honor students and four teachers.

Four teachers from Spiro—Melissa Darneal, Jessica Owens, Melanie Lawson, and Rashel Maynard received classroom grants from the Wrenetta Housden Grants to Teachers Program.

A grant to Mrs. Melissa Darneal in the amount of $427.50 for Forensic Science Start Up.

A grant to Mrs. Jessica Owens in the amount of $1,795 for Generation Genius.

A grant to Mrs. Melanie Lawson in the amount of $717.50 for a ZeeCraft Academic Buzzer System.

A grant to Mrs. Rashel Maynard in the amount of $3,800.00 for Astounding Sounds Aspirations.

 

All seniors wrote essays toward the following prompt: “Pick a quote and explain why you connect with it.” CASC instructors graded the essays, and Madilyn Lovell was selected top essay using the quote, “And when all is said and done, there is no greater success in the world than just being happy” which is attributed to Kate Smith, first lady of radio. She was asked to read it to the audience. Blake Dedmon was awarded the Blankenship Athletic Scholarship.

Carl Albert State College President Dr. Jay Faulkner presented Scholars Program scholarships to Madilyn Lovell and Reagan Gist totaling over $11,600 each as well as CASC Foundation scholarships with 12 credit hour tuition waivers per semester plus a $700 housing scholarship to the remaining nine senior Academic All Stars.

A total of $20,000 in scholarships was awarded from the Marcella P. Moore Scholarship Fund this year to the Academic All Star seniors for their college education. Madilyn Lovell received the top scholarship of $3,000 with Blake Dedmon, Reagan Gist, and Nico Kinney receiving $2,500 and the remainder of the seniors receiving $2,000 and $1,500 scholarships from the Marcella P. Moore Scholarship Fund.
