I was over at a friend’s house a few weeks ago and I noticed he had a trash dumpster at his barn. I asked him what made him decide to spend money on a dumpster. He said I’m too busy to load up all my junk and haul off, so this lets me kind of stay on top of not having stuff pile up on me.

I went home that evening and had forgot about his dumpster, until I went out in my shop looking for a box of stuff I ordered off Amazon about three months ago. I’ve got stuff on the shop floor, stacked on top of the work benches and underneath. I thought to myself that dumpster looks pretty good right now. As usual I tight-wadded myself into saying it was an added expense I didn’t need. So I kind of forgot about it.

This fall we’ve sort of traded our pellet stove for a wood stove, so I’m back to having to cut wood in the winter. I went out looking for my two chainsaws in the shop. I finally found them, but couldn’t find my chainsaw tool or the electric chain sharpener. There was junk upon junk. So, kind of like a tick in the spring an idea began to take hold in my mind. I was going to get me one of those dumpsters and clean up a bunch of junk around the place.

I had to think on for a few days, but I finally got up the nerve to call Vanhooks and ask him to bring me one. They brought it over at some point, I didn’t recognize it at first, it kind of blended in with all the other junk in my yard. My wife finally told me it was in her way, so I got the tractor and moved it right over in front of my shop door.

I was shocked, I didn’t even get all of the lawnmower shed cleaned out before the dumpster was full. I gave the shed a quick once over with the big broom and I was able to put the lawn mower and rototiller inside the shed. That hasn’t happened in a couple of years.

I can’t wait until they come empty the dumpster so I can refill it again. It’s going to take several loads to get the shop, horse barn, well house and garage all de-junked. I told a friend at a funeral today this is the best idea I’ve had in quite awhile. He told me I sounded like an old guy with nothing better to do.
