On Tuesday, April 10, Carl Albert State College celebrated National Library Week and National Poetry Month by hearing from a local writer and award-winning poet, Casey Cowan, and announcing the winners of the annual poetry contest in the Joe E. White Library.
Twenty-two student poets submitted their original work to be published in Runestones 2019 Anthology, a CASC publication. Some of the poets had more than one piece published, a huge accomplishment according to Susan Hill, CASC Communications and Fine Arts Instructor. The Anthology is available to be checked out from the CASC library.
Before announcing the contest winners, the crowd of nearly 50 heard from local poet Casey Cowan. The Heavener native has been writing poetry, prose, and short stories since the age of six. She never goes a day without endless amounts of mountain dew, lipstick, and a good playlist, she said. She is a 2015 graduate of CASC with an Associate of Arts Degree in pre-law, criminal justice.
Casey read a series of poems from her first book, “Things We Don’t Talk About,” as well a new piece from her upcoming book. She has not yet set a release date for her newest project but after the group heard from her at the event, it will be a highly anticipated publication.
After reading from her book, Casey answered questions from the crowd and offered advice to aspiring writers. Then, she and Susan Hill announced the winners of the 2019 poetry contest:
Jessie Reagan, 1st place “Recap”
Gloria Evans, 2nd place “My Response When I’m Told that Broken Things Are Hard to Love: A Poem”
Tyler Russell, 3rd place “Steps.”
