On Feb 20 at 6:41am, Poteau Police and LeFlore County EMS were dispatched to the Cavanal Scenic Expressway north of Burkle Avenue on a call of a single vehicle collision involving a motorcycle.
On arrival, Officers located a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the center median near the Witteville Drive overpass and the driver a short distance away.
The driver was identified as Jerry Ray Sommers Jr., age 47, of Poteau. Sommers was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigation showed that Sommers was northbound in the inside northbound lane of CSE approaching the Witteville Drive overpass.
Sommers departed the roadway to the left, entered the center median, and collided with guardrail support posts.
The collision is under further investigation by Poteau Police Detectives and Investigators from the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
