Press Release from Poteau Police Assistant Chief Greg Russell

 

May 29, 2019, at 5:32 PM, Poteau Police, Poteau Fire, and Leflore County EMS were dispatched to a call of a single vehicle injury accident on Witteville Drive at the Cavanal Scenic Expressway underpass in the city limits of Poteau.

 

Preliminary investigation at the scene determined that a 2010Honda Civic 4 Door was traveling eastbound on Witteville Drive approaching the Cavanal Scenic Expressway underpass. The driver lost control, crossed the center line, continued east, and struck the underpass support structure curb to the north. The impact with the curb caused the vehicle to turn the passenger side facing east and continue traveling east for 53 feet until the passenger side collided with a large, concrete bridge support pillar.

 

There were four occupants in the vehicle:

  • The driver, Logan Carroll 18 of Bokoshe, was transported by Leflore County EMS to Baptist Health Regional Medical Center Fort Smith with incapacitating injuries.
    • Front seat passenger, 17-year-old male. . An Investigator with the Office of the Medical Examiner of the State of Oklahoma came to the scene. The deceased was transported to a state facility for further investigation.
  • Driver’s side back seat passenger, Dylan Owens 18 of Shady Point, was transported by Leflore County EMS to.Mercy Fort Smith with a fracture injury.
  • Passenger side back seat passenger, 17-year-old male of Poteau, was transported by Leflore County EMS to Baptist Health Regional Medical Center Fort Smith with incapacitating injuries.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.Open containers of liquor were inside the vehicle. In accordance with state statute, a blood sample was taken from the driver. Results are pending examination by a State of

Oklahoma laboratory. Investigation into the collision is ongoing, with Poteau Police Investigators working in conjunction with specialized Oklahoma Highway Patrol resources and the M. E.’s Investigator.
