Imagine what it would be like to be a child and the only meal you got was the one provided by the school during breakfast and lunch.

That is why, 8 years ago, Glynda McDaniel started a community food drive for Poteau Schools.
This program is to help feed families of Poteau students that might need a little extra help with groceries through the two-week Christmas break. Starting around Thanksgiving they start gathering monetary donations and gathering names of families from all Poteau school sites.

Through donations McDaniel and her helpers not only shopped for the food, but delivered them as well. McDaniel is now retired, but the Feeding Families Food Drive program continues on.
Cindy Anson, the Director of Child Nutrition director kept the tradition going. “This year we will provide enough food for 81 families in Poteau, the food should last them for the entire time we are out for Christmas Break.”

On December 18, 2020, Anson along with some faculty and staff of Poteau Schools met at Harps in Poteau to gather the items available for these families.
David Evans, Store Manager at Harps, makes the shopping experience easier by having pallets of the items needed set up in an aisle in the store. Items such as milk, bread, hamburger meat, canned goods and more are easily accessible to faculty and staff shopping for the program.

In previous years, faculty and staff have delivered the groceries, but due to Covid 19 restrictions, this year, each family had to pick up their groceries at the store.
The program is run solely by faculty and staff from Poteau Schools volunteers and money comes from donations. Donations are accepted throughout the year. Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact Cindy Anson at Poteau Schools at 918-647-7724.
