Gwenda Taylor is proud to announce her candidacy for Ward 1, Seat 1 of the Poteau City Council.

A long-time resident of Poteau, Gwenda and her husband, Jay Taylor, have called Poteau home since 1993. Married for 42 years, they are the proud parents of two daughters, Lindsey Reece (married to Dustin) and Kara Breckenridge (married to Dalton), and grandparents to seven wonderful grandchildren. Gwenda is the daughter of Chief and Dorthy Steelman.

Professionally, Gwenda has dedicated 18 years to The Community State Bank in Poteau. Her commitment to the community extends far beyond her career. She has served on the LeFlore County Women’s Crisis Services Board of Directors for 18 years and the Choctaw Nation Ethics Commission for six years. Her past service includes the Patrick Lynch Library Board of Directors, and she has volunteered countless hours for civic events such as the Poteau Chamber of Commerce, the Poteau Rodeo, Balloonfest, the Chamber Banquet, the Mud Run, and numerous other charitable events and activities. Gwenda and Jay are also active members of Double Branch Baptist Church.

Gwenda’s approach to city council responsibilities will mirror her professional values: leadership, dedication, and hard work. She is passionate about Poteau’s progress and believes there is still much to achieve. Her vision includes bolstering support for existing businesses, attracting new retail businesses and industries to stimulate economic growth, and create jobs. She also supports long-term planning to address infrastructure needs, including street repairs, water and sewer system upgrades, park improvements, and enhanced animal control measures to reduce our stray pet population through spay and neuter programs.

As a proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Gwenda plans to leverage her connections to promote housing development, job creation, and grant opportunities that will benefit Poteau’s growth.

Reflecting on her candidacy, Gwenda shared, “I will never forget the values I learned growing up: faith, family, hard work, and the value of my word. With conservative principles and strong leadership, we can improve our city. I will work hard to enhance core city services, grow our economy, and support businesses and new jobs. I would be honored to have your vote on April 1, 2025.”
