I lost my dad New Year’s Eve. This past week I thought about Easter a lot. My wife’s job let them off work for Good Friday. For some reason I’ve noticed the Easter Lilly’s blooming more this year than most. It seems everything I see is in full “spring” mode.

I had a cow calve the other day, I wasn’t expecting her to calve for another month. She had a nice black bull calf. My wife’s goats have been kidding, we’ve had two sets of triplets so far. The leaves on the trees have been waking up from their long winter hibernation. It seems everywhere I go I see signs of life and birth. Spring is here and all of the living things are bearing fruit.

Over the past couple of years I’ve got to where I work to make extra money on the weekends. I always find something to make an extra dollar, whether it’s running a tractor, dozer or hauling pipe or calves, I’m usually able to make extra money on the weekends. Since I have been doing this I haven’t went to church near as often as I’d like too.

I haven’t been to church since my dad’s funeral. This past Sunday, which was Easter Sunday, I went to church, in fact my entire family went. We ate breakfast at the church before the service and had a chance to visit with a lot of folks.

As the preacher talked about all of the things that happened leading up to the resurrection, I read one passage and thought about it the entire time the preacher was preaching. Jesus’ best friend Peter denied knowing him three times. Jesus even predicted it to Peter before he was arrested.

As I read that passage I wondered who all betrays me when I’m not around.

So often I catch myself worrying what this person might say or do behind my back. Jesus knew ahead of time that Peter would deny knowing him, yet he went to the cross. He knew, and he still went willingly to the cross.

This year I’ve had to really try to focus on what’s in front of me and not what’s behind me. That passage kind of summed up a lot of worries I’ve had recently. I can’t control what others say or do, only how I react. It’s been hard, especially since my dad passed away.

Just as Jesus did, we all have to keep looking forward and not behind us. Spring is here, good things are coming. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” -Galatians 6:9
