And it is, too! That line from the song came to mind when I double checked the dates for this article. How many can name the movie that it was in? That got me thinking of slang gone by. When I was a kid, music was “cooool Daddio”. Then, “Far Out” and “Groovy. But go back a few more years, before 1951. In the Poteau Daily News, Bob Lee Kid would have written about this First Friday Cruise Night as “An endless stream of shiny “Jalopies” on Broadway. A few sayings that just recently became obsolete, well 30 years or so, are “Don’t touch that dial”- “Carbon Copy”- “Ya sound like a broken record” and “Hey, It’s your nickel”. Do ya even know what they meant? I’ll share some more next week. Just “Stayed Tuned.”
Here are dates for later in June so “Mark your Calendars”.Poteau’s Own, “Chaotic Resemblance” will share The message of Jesus at the Kingdom Come Festival in Greentown, In. on June 16th. “Earl Hearon and the Sound of Country” will be at Reynolds City Center Amphitheater on June 16th. The Merle Haggard Tribute has been requested by many fans of Haggard and fans of Earl. “Nobody does Merle like Earl”. Make plans to be there. Another of my favorite groups, “Mj and the Geezers” take the stage at the Poteau Pocket Park with a free show on Friday, June 16th. All of these events are family friendly, NS/ND and lawn chair get-togethers. More info later.
Live Music this weekend- Tonite, June 1st, “Rhythm Coalition” will be playin’ that funky music at the 906 Lounge on Garrison Ave. Ft. Smith. The band will bring a lil’ bit of soul, R&B, Funk with a jazz influence. Several songs are originals written by Mark Benson/guitar. Music is from 7-10 pm. Just down the street at Roosters on the Avenue, “Rhythm Coalition” will be layin’ it down on Sat. 3rd from 10pm til 2 am. Take time to catch their show.
My good friends “The Stagemasters” have a busy weekend. They will play at Dawn’s/Red Oak on Friday 2nd from 7-10 pm. Then, back by popular demand, at the Sat. 3rd Dance at Muldrow City Limits. It starts at 7 pm. Two nites to break out your “Blue Suede Shoes” and polish up your belt buckle.
“The Black Diamonds” will bring their show to the Coffee Cup on Friday 2nd for Poteau’s First Friday Cruise Night. I love this band and don’t get enough chances to hear them. The band kinda came together at the Coffee Cup. Ben Whiteaker, Dalton Luman, Bryson Cook and Kaleb Oliver play a mix of Originals, Pop, Rock and twang. Good music And great to see them in Poteau again. Music starts at 7 pm and it’s outside so bring a lawn chair and watch the “Jalopies” on Broadway. Best Coffee in town.
Another bunch that we don’t get to hear enough, “Billy Hoffman and the Asphalt Cowboys” will be gathering at the Spiro Eagles. These folks put on a Show! Music starts at 8 pm and who knows when it will end. Grab your pardner and get to this dance. Special Guest sometimes included!
“59 South” will be at Crocky’s Cafe in Hackett on Sat 3rd. Good food- Great music- Outside Stage, you will love this place. Country and Rock classics will start at 6 pm. CTC Worship will play on Friday 2nd. Again, Good food an Music for the Spirit. Downtown Hackett, Ark.
The Lot/Wister features a young singer/songwriter from Keota, now hailing from Ft. Worth Texas, Jackie Darlene. Check out her fb page. This lady can belt it out. This will be my top pick for the weekend. Don’t miss her show on Friday 2nd. 6-9 pm.
Just across the line in Mena, The Lum and Abner Festival is Friday and Sat. The best Family Friendly event this weekend. Lots of activities and contests, I am trying to find out what the age limit is for the Baby Crawl. Live music both days, “The Shady Oak Tribadours” will play Friday 2nd from 2-3:30pm. Then, the band will play at The Knotty Pint on Sat. 3rd for their Bike Nite. Their show is from 3-6 pm.
