Poteau, Okla. – Candelyn Kitchens recently achieved early acceptance into Southwestern Oklahoma State’s College of Pharmacy. Kitchens is 2019 graduate of Heavener High School. While in high school, Kitchens participated in the Biomedical Sciences program at Kiamichi Tech’s Poteau Campus. Through the Biomedical Sciences program, she studied human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, public health and earned advanced math and science credits. During her senior capstone project, Kitchens researched how to own and operate her own pharmacy. She also participated in the Pharmacy Science competition through the Career Tech Student Organization, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). While working on her capstone project during her senior year, Kitchens also took concurrent colleges classes at Carl Albert State College.

Kitchens credits her experience in the Biomedical Sciences program with giving her an advantage over other applicants to SWOSU’s College of Pharmacy. Kitchens stated, “As a sophomore in high school I was afraid of how hard the curriculum was going to be in the Biomed program. It was very challenging but so worth it. The instructors at Kiamichi Tech challenged me and I believe this experience helped set me apart from other applicants.” Kitchens endured a two-hour interview before being accepted into the College of Pharmacy. During that interview, she was required to write an impromptu essay. She believes the rigor and training she received at Kiamichi Tech helped prepare her for this interview.

Kiamichi Tech is now accepting high school applications for the 2021-2022 school year. Current high school students can apply online at
