Press release
LEFLORE COUNTY—The LeFlore County American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) recently contributed funds toward the Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center (EOMC) Telemed program. Kiamichi Electric Cooperative also contributed to the joint effort.
The EOMC program places Telemed units in area schools; the most recent recipient is LeFlore Public School. The Telemed unit allows students, faculty and staff to see a nurse practitioner via video conference during school hours with the assistance of the school nurse. School absences are cut by an estimated 43 percent, keeping children in the classroom and parents at work.
“This allows all students, faculty and staff to have access to healthcare in a rural setting without ever leaving the school grounds,” said EOMC CEO Bob Carter. “We are so fortunate to have local companies that buy in to our mission and vision of making a healthier community. American Farmers & Ranchers, as well as Kiamichi Electric Cooperative, have given LeFlore Schools a wonderful gift in the form of a Telemed unit.”
A major mission of AFR/OFU organizations across Oklahoma is giving back to the communities they serve. LeFlore County AFR/OFU also offers scholarships for students to attend college or vocational school and is involved in many other aspects of agriculture across the state through, legislation, farm shows and youth events.
“LeFlore County AFR/OFU is excited about the EOMC mission and we’re thrilled to be able to contribute to the overall health of our communities,” said David Alexander, secretary of LeFlore County AFR/OFU. “We are honored to be part of something so innovative and beneficial.”
AFR/OFU Cooperative is a membership services organization established in 1905 as Oklahoma Farmers Union. AFR/OFU provides educational, legislative and cooperative programs across the state and serves as a watchdog for Oklahoma’s family farmers and ranchers and rural communities. The organization is actively supportive of the state’s agricultural industry and rural population with membership consisting of farmers actively involved in production agriculture and non-farmers adding their voice in support of AFR/OFU principles.
