A couple of years ago I was fortunate enough to get to teach geography to a good group of kids at Arkoma. I really like teaching my history, government and geography.
The textbook kind of went continent by continent. It would touch on the major industries, religions and cultures on each continent. I’m always trying to figure out new ways to keep the kids interested in my classes. One day I was watching Jim Shockey’s television show “Uncharted.” At the beginning of his show he spent five minutes explaining the local culture, customs and the loc economy where he was hunting. I realized his show could easily supplement my geography class.
So, it became a popular part of our class each time we studied a new continent we watched his show. It was also a huge help that all of his shows could easily be accessed for free on YouTube.
When Jim Shockey’s wife was diagnosed with cancer I shared it with the class. One of the students said we should send her a get well card. So, in middle school style we fashioned her a huge get well card from red poster paper. When it arrived at their house Jim and Louise posted it on their Facebook page and thanked the students and I. Jim even mailed me an autographed thank you card.
All of my life I’ve dreamed of hunting the big five in Africa. Lion, Leopard, Hippo, Elephant and Cape Buffalo. I’ve read books about African hunting by every great author from Hemingway, Ruark, WD Bell and my all time favorite, Peter Hathaway Capstick. Theodore Roosevelt hunted in Africa as well.
This week I learned that Louise Shockey passed away from cancer. As always Jim was by her side. He was a doting husband and his love for his wife has been evident for many years.
Out of all of the professional sportsmen on TV Jim Shockey has always been my favorite. He’s a class act when it comes to conserving our wildlife and wild places for future generations.
My deepest condolences to Jim and his family as they go through these trying times.
