Memorial Day- Live Music
Monday 29th is a day to remember those who have fallen in service for our country in the armed forces. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for friends and family. With all the hub-bub in the media and online chatter to distract us, please do your best to share the meaning to kids and grandkids. Remember the fallen from your family. What a wonderful world it would be if there were no wars, but conflict sustains the fighting. So make this last Monday in May more than just a day of parades and picnics. Remember our fallen service men and women. Before it was designated Memorial day, it was Decoration day. In memory and to honor friends and family gone before us, we used to gather, clean headstones and cemeteries. When I was just a young’en, my family would gather together, load hoes, brooms and a picnic and spend all day preparing for Decoration. Several of us, Grandparents, Kids and neighbors, would clean up the final resting places of family members. My Grandpa would sit in the shade with his file and keep the hoes sharpened. This was all done by hand, no mowers. Then, at noon, lunch was a picnic on the ground. Fried chicken and a jug of sweet tea was usually on the menu. Oh, and my job at the time was to keep the heck outta the way. Easier said than done! What a good memory. Now-a-days, it’s rushing around to make time in our busy lives and just stop by for a quick wipe down on headstones and new plastic flowers. I really owe my family more than that. So this Decoration Day, spend time with your family and pass this tradition on to the kids.! Live music this week- Jazz at the Museum will be Tuesday May 23rd. The Al Grzech Trio ft. guest vocalist Niki Waters will start at 6:30 and play Jazz standards and a few pop favorites. The evening of music is hosted by David and Donna Deaton and The LeFlore County Historical Society. The Museum holds many historical treasures and memories from Poteau and our County. So, make plans to catch this great show.
“The Stagemasters” will be at Neumieir’s Whippoorwill Restaurant on Sat. 27th from 7-10pm. Muldrow City Limits hosts the Sat. 27th Dance and “Backroads” lay down the classic Country and Rock for the dancers. Starts at 7 pm. The Ft. Smith Senior Activity Center on Cavanaugh rd. will host a dance on the Friday 26th with “Bricktown” providing the music. Great place, NS/ND, with a big dance floor and you are guaranteed to have a good time. Watch my fb page to get the info on the Sat. dance. Dance starts at 7 pm. Dawn’s Diner in Red Oak are NOT open this weekend so that they can have a holiday with family. Big plans for a good time next week. Live Music outside this weekend. Now I am gonna go out on a limb and predict perfect weather for Friday and Saturday. Last weekend I was half right and 50-50 ain’t bad. Crocky’s Cafe/Hackett has a great lineup. Friday 26th, “The Remnants” will bring their style of Rock, blues with a lil’ bit of Country in the mix. “Paul and Back-in-the -Day” take the stage. Good food, great music both nites that start at 6 pm. “The Shady Oak Tribadours” are becoming regulars at Gibby’s down in the Mountains at Big Cedar. Music, food, awesome scenery and it all starts at 7 pm. Because of the Memorial Day weekend, the music for the first weekend of June will be in the Sat. 26th edition of the Poteau Daily News. Subscribe today, get it delivered and keep up with current important news, sports, weather and entertainment. I am excited to see that “The Black Diamonds” will be playing at the Coffee Cup for the First Friday Cruise Night. Always really liked this band. The Lum and Abner Celebration in Mena, Ar. will be June 2nd and 3rd. “Shady Oak Tribadours” are the featured band. “Rhythm Coalition” will be at The 906 Cigar Lounge on Thurs. 1st and Rooster’s on Sat. 3rd. And “Chaotic Resemblance” will be at the Kingdom Come Festival. More info next week.
