James Lockhart lives near the Kiamichi mountains in southeast Oklahoma. He writes cowboy stories and fools with cows and horses. The following poem is extremely timely in light of our recent icing here in LeFlore County, Oklahoma.
Net wrap
Use that net wrap they say
It’ll save your hay until a cold winter day
My old baler was just about done,
So I traded up for a newer net wrap one,
I cut, raked and baled
All summer long,
I put that net wrap on
I doubled wrapped them all,
and baled way up in the fall
I needed ever straw and leaf
To get through this drought stricken grief
The net wrap keeps the bales good an dry
I can tell the cows are a gettin by,
There sure ain’t much wasted hay, it kind of saves day by day,
But- gettin that net wrap off
With snow an ice is kind of tough,
Man I shouldn’t of used that much,
I’ve ruined a case knife,
I’ve had most of my life
Trying to hack through the ice and snow
so these durned cows get fed in the cold
I’ve got a big pile of net wrap, snow and ice
I ain’t got a clue what to do or where to put it,
I just know it’ll sure be nice
When there’s green grass to suffice,
When the last bale is put out, an there ain’t no more feedin left to do
I think I’ll buy a new case knife, and maybe even a pair of boots
One things for sure though,
I’ll not double wrap the bales again, I’ve learnt that’s kind of a sin
Net wrap is good unless it’s froze, gettin it off in the winter gets mighty old
