Each year organizations and groups, sports teams, sorority groups, honor society groups, boy scouts, cub scouts, and cheer groups come out to help make a difference for their community.
At this year’s festival one group had the great pleasure to honor one of our veterans and stand out at this year’s event.
The local Boy Scouts Troop #30 held a special commemorative flag ceremony at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds building during the 15th Annual Poteau Balloon Fest.
The Troop members were on site lending a hand to help raise an incredibly special flag this year flown during the two-day event.
The Poteau Balloon Fest was presented the flag to be flown by the family of Jesse Cast, a veteran and Major of the Army Airforce Tactical Unit who served and was discharged in November of 1943. The Flag was presented at the time of Jesse’s death in 1972. The 50-Year-Old Flag discovered after his wife’s death by his daughter Carol Johnson and Great Grand Daughter Macy Ford contacted Karen Wages, Poteau Chamber inquiring about donating the flag.
“When I was notified about the flag, I immediately knew the perfect place to fly the 50-year-old flag was the 15th Annual Poteau Balloon Fest and the local scout troop were the ones that could oversee the ceremony and pay resects and honor Mr. Cast and his family”, states Karen Wages CEO. “We have the best troop leaders Scout Master PJ Brown, Leaders Ronni Plank and Stevie Brusch. The scouts were on duty for the weekend picking up trash and cleaning the facilities. This ceremony was an honor for both the Fairgrounds, Balloon Fest, and the Chamber of Commerce.”
