Poteau High School Band member, Savannah Fabian spent the weeks of June 9 through June 24, 2018 at the the Oklahoma Summer Art Institute.
Fabian, 16, and a Senior at Poteau High School was selected through a competitive audition process. Auditions are held throughout the state in January and February.
The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute (OSAI) is an intensive 2-week residential school that provides professional training to artistically talented Oklahoma Highschool students, including graduating seniors, in the visual, literary, and performing arts.
Fabian was the only participant from LeFlore County to attend the OSAI and the only student representing a small town.
Fabian is the daughter of John and Rebecca Fabian; Grandparents – Jose and Lisa Fabian of Poteau and David and Rhonda Armstrong of Shady Point.
Fabian achievements include – 1st Chair in SEOBDA All-District Band since 7th grade, OSSBDA Small-School All-State Band member 10th and 11th grade, OkMEA All-State Symphonic Band member 10th and 11th grade, OSAI orchestra member 11th grade, Superior Ratings at State Solo and Ensemble Contests 10th and 11th grade, Poteau High School Outstanding Band Member 8th through 11th grade and Junior Drum Major for Poteau Marching Band 11th grade.
Each student accepted to attend OSAI receives a full scholarship. This year, nearly 1,000 high school students auditioned for 267 available spots.
Recipient of scholarship made possible through the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the following donors: Clark and Wanda Bass Family Foundation Scholars Fund and Sarkey’s Foundation Scholars Fund. Additional program support was provided by the Oklahoma Arts Council, Jerome Westheimer Family Foundation, Sharna and Irvin Frank Foundation, Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and Zarrow Foundations.
This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Fabian future plans are to attend Oklahoma City University to get her Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance. “I will make a career out of freelancing, auditioning for possible spots in orchestras or bands, and giving lessons,”said Fabian.
