Police officer’s motto is to Protect and to Serve and that includes protecting themselves as well.

With the increase in active shooters situations, safety for the officers is of upmost importance, when the police frequently respond to calls where weapons are involved or alleged to be involved.

Through the Oklahoma District Attorney’s Council, in conjunction with the Justice Assistance Grant – Local Law Enforcement Program the Poteau Police Department received a $10,000 grant.

The grant was submitted by Assistant Police Chief Greg Russell and the grant money was used to by six Ballistic Shields.

“We hope that we will never have to use them, but with the rise of active shooters and police stand-off situations, it good to know that officers are more protected in those situations,” stated Russell.
