Poteau, OKLAHOMA – According to Assistant Chief Greg Russell with the Poteau Police Department, on March 16, 2019, at approximately 12:06 am, Patrolman Jason Close of the Poteau Police Department was patrolling southbound in the 1200 Block of North Broadway in the city limits of Poteau. Patrolman Close was driving a marked 2013 Ford Police Interceptor sedan.
A black 2004 Chevrolet SUV, driven by Sharon Shawkey 59, of Poteau, pulled westbound from a private drive across North Broadway as if attempting to go straight across to Hickory Street. Patrolman Close attempted evasive action but was struck in the driver’s side by the SUV. The SUV pushed the patrol car west into the curb and they came to rest on the sidewalk.
Patrolman Close was treated and released for minor injuries. The patrol car is a total loss.
The collision is being investigated by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
