Did You Know?
2008 – The county gave a 50-year lease to the LeFlore County Historical Society. Since that time, the Hotel has undergone many changes to bring it back to its glory days. It took many volunteer hours and hard work to make the Hotel look as it did in 1932.
2013 – Artifacts were moved from the now closed Kerr Museum.
2014 -The museum started to look and feel like a museum with artifacts in many of the rooms.
2016 -The museum began staying open Tuesday through Saturday 11 to 3pm
Also in 2016 – The LeFlore County Historical Society at the Hotel Lowrey added the Poteau Alumni Rooms, the Veteran’s Room and the Presidential Room on the second floor as well as three mini-split Heat and Air conditioners.
In 2017 – LCHS added 3 mini-split Heat & Air Conditioners to the third floor.
In 2018 LCHS added rooms dedicated to Dr. John Montgomery and Senator Robert S. Kerr. A chair lift was added to the second and third floors making it easier for visitors who would otherwise not be able to go upstairs.
2019 – The building was added to the National Registry of Historic Places
2022 – Lowrey Building turns 100 years old.
The LCHS also hosted a Breakfast to the Oklahoma Freewheel Bicycle group that came through Poteau in June of 2022.
Other projects we have done:
Added awning to the outside of the building and a new roof
The LeFlore County Historical Society located inside the Historic Hotel Lowrey offers lobby rentals, great for small gatherings and meetings.
The LCHS has Tuesday Lunch at the Museum every third Tuesday of the month. This is a fundraiser for the museum. Other fundraisers are: The LCHS Golf Tournament, Taste of LeFlore County, Christmas Fantasy Forest tree decorating contest and Veterans Day Pancake Breakfast.
We also get involved with the community providing volunteers and services to the Downtown Fall Festival, City wide Trash-off, and Veterans Day Parade.
Future Plans are to host a July 4th Celebration
