Press release from Vera Nelson, Talihina Chamber of Commerce

September 26, 1949, a terrible tragedy occurred near Talihina.

Several people in the vicinity of Talihina heard a plane in trouble. The B-29 crashed and soon became a blazing inferno.

Thirteen Air Force men lost their lives in this crash. On September 28th 2019 a memorial to these brave men who were serving their country will be erected at the Visitors Center in Talihina.

Several of the family and friends will arrive early to visit with those who witnessed the crash when it happened or soon afterwards when they visited the crash scene.

The families have so many unanswered questions about the crash. What caused the crash?

Why didn’t the passengers and crew eject the plane? Could this tragedy been avoided?

The family is planning a trip to Fort Smith, AR while they are here to see and board a B-29 airplane like the one that was lost in the crash.

There will be someone who will guide them on a tour of the plane.

It is the hope of the family members that they will get answers to their questions with this tour.

Come and join us Saturday September 28th as the family unveils the Remembrance Memorial for these 13 brave men who lost their lives in the fiery crash.

There will also be speakers and a parade.
