Shady Point School hosted their 3rd Annual Archery Tournament at the Reynolds Center in Poteau on Friday and Saturday, January 15-16. Over 1,300 people attended over the two days, including 545 archers competing from Oklahoma and Arkansas. A strict Covid plan was in place and guidelines followed to ensure a safe environment. “We wanted to maintain safety and still offer students a sense of normality,” said Bruce Gillham, school superintendent.
Shady Point began their archery program four years ago and it has grown into a well-known program statewide. “The first year we held a tournament we did it outside at the school and had six schools participate. Last year we moved it to the Reynolds Center and hosted 348 archers. We far exceeded our expectations this year,” said Hank Austin, Shady Point archery coach.
The following schools participated…Arkoma, Battiest, Brushy, Chandler, Charleston (AR), Coweta, Healdton, Hodgen, Howe, Idabel, Lawton MacArthur, Lexington, Locust Grove, Panama, Rattan, Red Oak, Roland, Salina, Shady Point, Tulsa Area Homeschool Archery, and Wagoner. “We appreciate all of the teams who competed. We had some long-established programs join us, along with some schools who just began their archery program this year. It’s exciting to see more schools realizing the value that this sport can bring to their kids and community,” Austin said. “We hope that our event inspires other schools in the area to compete in the sport.” More LeFlore County schools competed in the tournament this year.
“It takes a lot of people to pull off an event this big. I want to thank all of our parents, school staff, other volunteers, Brian Jackson of Tahlequah, Karen and the Poteau Chamber, Thomas and Chris with the Reynolds Center, everyone who donated items and funds for our hospitality room, all of the archers, coaches, and fans who came, our school board and administration, and most of all our team,” Austin said. “Our kids put in a lot of hours helping prepare and clean-up, in addition to practicing all week and then competing. We are blessed with a great group of kids.”
