OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Jared Deck, D-Norman, Rep. Annie Menz, D-Norman, and Rep. Jacob Rosecrants, D-Norman, released the following joint statement on a proposed city ordinance discussion to allow encampments for people experiencing homelessness on residential private property.

“First, we want to make clear that this proposal to be discussed at the Norman City Council Study Session tomorrow does not reflect the needs, desires, or intentions of those in Norman who are working diligently to assist and solve issues of housing and lifting folks out of homelessness.

“Second, we want to clarify that this item is on a Study Session agenda, effectively a preliminary committee discussion. It is not on any voting agenda and will not be decided during said Study Session. There are hurdles along the way before it could reach a deciding vote.

“Third, we are confident this proposal will be seen by the Norman City Council for what it is — an embarrassment that only furthers false narratives about our community and the work being done by extraordinary organizations and individuals on the ground.

“Fourth, any Council Member supporting or associated with this proposal should be held accountable by residents. Proposals such as this are tracked by homeowners’ insurance companies, configured into actuarial risk data, and blatantly work to raise the cost-of-living.

“The community of Norman puts our compassionate words into action by working to provide meaningful pathways out of homelessness and either into treatment or the workforce. There is too much at stake and too much to do to waste time on embarrassing proposals as this.” – Rep. Jared Deck, Rep. Annie Menz, Rep. Jacob Rosecrants.
