KENTON, OK — The Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department is issuing an update regarding the dinosaur track site located on private property near the High Point Trail at Black Mesa State Park.

First and foremost, we want to extend our sincere gratitude to the landowner, who has generously welcomed countless visitors over the years to experience this remarkable paleontological treasure. His willingness to share access has allowed thousands to witness an awe-inspiring piece of prehistoric history.

To protect the long-term integrity of these significant fossilized tracks, the landowner has made the difficult but important decision to close access to this area. We ask all visitors to please respect this private property, observe posted boundaries, and avoid entering the closed site. Preservation is essential to ensure these irreplaceable tracks remain intact for future generations.

While this particular location is now closed, Black Mesa and the surrounding region continue to offer exceptional opportunities for families, students, and dinosaur enthusiasts to explore Oklahoma’s prehistoric past. Visitors can still enjoy several hands-on, educational, and family-friendly experiences, including:

Guests can view dinosaur tracks located inside Black Mesa State Park, explore the giant apatosaurus femur replica near the park entrance, and make a short trip to Clayton Lake State Park and Dinosaur Trackways in Clayton Lake, New Mexico, where one of the region’s most impressive trackway sites is preserved. Visitors can also snap a photo with “Dino the MesaSaurus” outside the Camp Works store in the park or let young explorers dig into paleontology at the park’s designated dino dig site near the office.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation as we work together to protect Oklahoma’s unique natural and cultural resources.
