Living the Pledge of Allegiance  By Congressman Markwayne Mullin

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

As Americans, we have all recited the Pledge of Allegiance thousands of times throughout our lives. In the morning at school, at the start of community meetings and even before Members begin their daily session in Congress, we look toward our flag, place our right hand over our heart and recite those words. Often times, we have said it so many times we forget the meaning behind what we are pledging.

The flag of the United States of America is a symbol of freedom, not only to Americans, but to people across the world. Freedom is never free and our men and women in uniform have sacrificed so much for it. When we pledge allegiance, we are stating we will always defend our flag and what it represents.

While our country may feel more politically divided than ever, there is still much more uniting us than dividing us. God created all of us equally and through Him, we can do all things. We must always strive to follow His example and love one another. Despite the differences between us, we must come together as “one Nation under God.”

Our democracy has faced many challenges throughout our history which have threatened to dissolve it. Time and again, Americans have risen to the occasion and overcome the challenge. No matter what is thrown at us, we remain “indivisible.”

This Sunday, June 14th, is Flag Day, where we commemorate our symbol of freedom across the world. The next time you stand in front of our flag and put your hand over your heart for the Pledge of Allegiance, I encourage you to think about what it truly means and how you can live out the pledge each day.
