University strengthening community ties beyond the classroom

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) partnered with Tahlequah Public Schools and the Cherokee County Health Services for the annual “Walk and Roll” event, bringing together roughly 80 local students for a morning dedicated to active living and community connection between the university and young students at the Sequoyah Pre-K in Tahlequah.

Rowdy was joined by a dedicated group of NSU staff, including several NSU Police officers who rode alongside the children to ensure a safe environment.

The local initiative honored the National Bike & Roll to School Day to encourage students across the U.S. to bike, walk or scooter to school. The event promotes health, safety and community awareness while highlighting the importance of safer routes for children.

Brian Manley, director of NSU Admissions and Recruitment, highlighted the value of personal and community connection during early education.

“Events like ‘Walk and Roll’ give us a wonderful opportunity to step beyond our campus walls and connect directly with the next generation of leaders,” said Manley. “Building strong relationships with our local schools and families is at the heart of what NSU stands for.”

Desirae Bloomer, community prevention specialist for Tahlequah Public Schools, explains how physical activity boosts a child’s confidence during a school day.

“Research shows that physical activity can help students feel more alert and ready to learn,” Bloomer said. “Getting some movement before and during the school day gives students a chance to wake up, get energized and prepare for the day ahead.”

NSU President Rodney Hanley emphasized the lasting value of investing in early education to support students throughout their entire academic journey.

“When we invest in early education, we are laying the foundation for a lifetime of growth, curiosity and leadership,” said Hanley.  “At NSU, our goal isn’t just to meet students when they reach college age; it’s to foster a vibrant culture of learning and community support at every step along the way.”
