OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Oklahoma Today magazine, the official magazine of the state of Oklahoma, announced today the creation of its inaugural Okie Awards, which pick up the mantle of the magazine’s one-time Oklahoman of the Year Award, which was launched in 1992 and discontinued more than a decade ago. Awards will be given in more than a dozen categories, including Okie Musician of the Year, Okie Restaurant of the Year, and Okie Event of the Year. Public voting is open until September 19th at www.oklahomatoday.com/.

“We didn’t want to use words like best or favorite in the award names, because my best or my favorite may not be someone else’s,” said Nathan Gunter, Oklahoma Today Editor-in-Chief. “So, we asked our panelists to think about not just quality but impact. Who has made Oklahoma awesome this year in a unique way?”

The magazine also will confer two larger awards: Okie of the Year and the Oklahoma Standard Award. Okie of the Year is awarded to an Oklahoman or group of Oklahomans who have exemplified the state’s spirit, while the Oklahoma Standard Award is given to a person or organization who demonstrates the spirit of the Oklahoma Standard by doing good in their community. The magazine will celebrate its winners with an event on Thursday, November 6, at the Chicken Shack in Arcadia. Details and ticket information coming soon.

Oklahoma Today is published bimonthly by the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. Founded in 1956, the magazine shares Oklahoma’s destinations, food, events, people, and history with its international award-winning bimonthly publication, Oklahoma Today magazine, as well as a YouTube show, podcast, newsletters, and more.
