Weaver, who chairs the Senate Public Safety Committee, received the award for authoring Senate Bill 54, which aimed to strengthen penalties for impaired drivers and prevent repeat DUI offenses.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving,” Weaver said. “This recognition is not mine alone, but it represents the collective effort of advocates, families, law enforcement, and lawmakers in our state who are committed to protecting the public and preventing senseless tragedies on our roadways.”
Weaver’s Senate Bill 54 expanded the definition of aggravated DUI within state law to include instances in which an individual drives under the influence while also committing additional offenses, such as causing a motor vehicle accident, eluding law enforcement, exceeding the speed limit in a school zone, or having a minor in the vehicle. Under the new law, which takes effect Nov. 1, these combined offenses will be classified as a felony.
“Our laws must fully address the gravity of driving under the influence. I appreciate MADD and everyone who supported this effort to build on Oklahoma’s public safety initiatives,” Weaver added.
