Breaking Records – Temps and events
One good thing about the hot weather is that we hadn’t had to mow for a couple of weeks and may not for the rest of the Summer. Average temp so far in July has been 97*. Number of “Live Music” events 10 per week. Outside events – 3 per week! Extreme Heat warnings were just issued. One bright spot was the ¼ inch we got in Panama last night.
My advice is that if you are old enuf to remember the 1960’s – just find a cool place inside to listen or dance! Rollin’ brownouts in the forecast for the parts of the country that have outdated and overtaxed power grids. Ya know, I have a greater respect for the generations of my family that lived before fans, water-coolers and Air Conditioners! And They didn’t whine nearly as much as I do now.
The best gig last weekend was at the Clearwater Cafe on Lake Tenkiller. Oklahoma Moon enjoyed two nights of awesome food. They could dive in the clear water before the show starts and cool off with a moonlit skinny dip after. Get ready for Part Two! Plan on a trip up to Lake Tenkiller this week. Piddles Cajun Bar and Grill at Petit Bay, Lake Tenkiller presents “Oklahoma Moon” this Sat 23rd at 8 pm. This popular eatery has the best Cajun cooking and the very best “Live Music” around! Oklahoma Moon has an awesome show with Classic Country music. It’s so good that it fits almost anywhere!
Thursday night kicks off the 4th weekend of July at the Bakery District. Al Grzech invites all musicians to the Ft. Smith Jazz Jam on Thurs. the 21st. Downbeat is at 6:30 pm. Songs are selected from the Real Books and sheet music will be provided for horns, keys and guitars. Musicians range from experienced to student music majors from UAFS. Always very interesting and enjoyable. Good food – awesome music!
Butch Cavandish ft. David Carbrey will bring a mix of Country Rock, Red Dirt and Classic Country tunes on Sat. 23rd and Friday the 29th. Music starts at 8:30 pm both nights. JJ’s Grill on Phoenix Ext. has live music 6 nights a week ‘cept on a few nights with Razorbacks games on the big screen. Check out their calendar at jjsgrill.com.
Earl Hearon and the Sound of Country will be at Spiro Eagles on Sat. the 23rd. The very best in Classic Country starts at 8 pm. Earl will include some of the songs from his Merle Haggard Tribute Show. If ya can’t dance to “The Hag”, ya need to take some lessons. Great band and a big dance floor so get there early to get a good seat.
Dawn’s Diner in Red Oak has a wide selection of grub on the menu from Catfish to Chicken, Fried Steak to Burgers/fries. Deserts are heavenly! Enjoy live music while you feast. Scot Francis will be there on Friday 22nd and “Make it a Double” (Dave and Connie Abbott) on Sat 23rd. Music starts at 7 pm. Speaking of Sat. 23rd, Scot Francis will be in Stigler at the West End Bar on Main St.

Almost too much music next week. The biggest event of the Summer is “The Peacemaker Festival”. In the Riverfront Park Amphitheater, next Friday 22nd and Sat. 23rd, the music starts at 3 pm both days! Some of the finest Americana, Red Dirt, Texas Country and more will make the temps bearable. Always plenty of water around and shade from 5 pm. This year features Lukas Nelson and POTR, Zach Bryan, The Steel Woods, Charley Crockett, Graycie York and more. Tickets are sold out BUT I saw that many were available on fb. Good luck with that. It will be a weekend to remember!

Felisha McKenzie at Joe’s Place Poteau on the 30th. Libby Starkes and the Stray Dawgs over at Crocky’s Cafe on Sat the 30th. Grannie’s Nightmare will Rock in Ft Smith at La Heurtas on Friday 22nd and Joe;s Cantina and Grill on Sat. 23rd. More info on these shows next week.
