Country Spotlight - Randy Smith
It’s been a day or two since I picked on a local musician . A sudden stop last month kinda changed my schedule . So now that I’m back on track , it’s my good friend Randy Smith’s turn in the barrel ! And yes , I’m talking bout the “Green Grocer” from Panama Marvin’s IGA . He is a singer , guitar picker , and Fiddler ! And here is some of the story , holding only a lil’ back !
Growing up in SW Okla. City , he was exposed to a lotta of great country music in the area . Self taught on guitar , and learning a few Haggard songs , it wasn’t long til he was in a band . He got to know and took lessons on fiddle from Famous Amos Hendrick , Leader of Hank Thompson’s Brazos River boys ! So getting exposed to Dim Lights , Thick Smoke , and Loud , Loud Music , Randy formed his first band in the early 80’s , Southern Blend ! Urban Cowboy had kicked up a boom in Country Music so there were lots of places to play and people to listen and dance ! They played for several years round Chickasha and Dibble area ! Yep , Dibble is a town in Okla. Look it up !
Fast forward to early 90’s , Randy had moved to LeFlore Co. and slowly worked back in the area’s music scene . Reforming Southern Blend with Rodney Reed , Don May , Jackie Lineville and Joey Yandell , they played dance music at the Executive Club below Long Lake Hill.
That’s the first time that I met Randy and set-in on bass for them BUT neither of us remember much of the nite ! We were reminded by an old picture !
Later after suffering a couple of strokes , he sold all his equip to Billy Wilson and he laid low for a while ! Then , 2000 or so , Billy pulled him outta retirement . And then Terry Barnes and Ricky Ward started Wildhorse , playing Eagles clubs and VFW on both sides of the State line ! Thank You for that Billy !!!
Music took a back seat again for a while , until I ran into Randy and Reggie Wells play and singing . And they pulled me outta retirement to form Tres Barrochos No Mas , lil’ later known as Backsliders Wine . BW played the Coffee Cup often and helped with lots of fundraisers and benefits ! I was proud of our 3 piece Americana ! But Change is inevitable so just a quick history , Dale Fraze Sr played drums for us , then Max Harris joined on bass . I left in the summer of 2017 to join a 9 piece band Big Daddy and the Mama’s Boys ! BW added Ricky Ward , guitar and Randy Fennall , steel guitar and started evolving more to classic country . Reggie left to continue his love of Americana with Larry Taylor and LaDonna Maul in Rearview Mirror .
Now , Backsliders Wine was ready for dancers ! So with over 100 yrs of stage experience , these guys play classic country to folks on both sides of the line . Still playing at the Coffee Cup , Choctaw Casino and the Spiro Eagles , they never fail to help with benefits and fundraisers , they are awesome ! Watch here for schedules for dates !
Randy has been a close friend for 10 yrs . We have run a lotta the same roads and crashed a couple of times . But what makes him so special is his big heart and shining personality . He never meets a stranger , always willing to help others , he uses his talents for good NOT evil . And I love him like a brother !
Poteau All-class Reunion 2021 will be Sept. 3rd and 4th ! I mention it because I have been getting excited about the Fri. Night Tailgate Party . Planning the Live Music has been fun . Larry Taylor is doing all the heavy lifting and deserves credit and thanks for it ! He is putting the band of Old Dawgs back on stage . The dance music of the 50’s , 60’s and 70’s will be with Rearvue Mirror bringing the Old Dawg , other Alumni musicians to be featured guest . I got to practice with them and it is gonna be a varied and familiar songs from our youth . So make plans to be there . Providing music during the breaks will be River Valley Music Co. with DJ Eric Standrige . He will keep things hopping while we get to mingle , visit and Eat ! Info on Poteau High School Alumni page on fb !
Live Music this week ! Grannie’s Nightmare will be rocking in Ft. Smith at Ava’s , just off the Jenny Lind Exit on I-540 ! Music is from 7-10 pm . These guys are a favorite at Ava’s and always gets the place jumping . Make plans on being there !
