Support Live Music #138 — LeFlore Co, Area By Terry Joe Wiles

“If only youth had the knowledge; if old age had the strength”

Another way of saying “Youth is wasted on the young”! Or a country way of telling the Young bull and Old bull joke ! If I had applied half my energy in learning instead of thinking I knew it all ! Aw, just some regrets ! But I said all that to git to this !

Bridge South Band just came on my radar and I like them a lot ! A young , high energy band outta the Pocola area . They got the grit of Red Dirt and the growl of combined experience that will take them places in our area . Their music is drawn from all genres . But what I like is they not only listened , they learned . Tyler Smith says SRV is a big influence and proves it by using Stevie Ray’s style in his picking !

Bridge South Band has songs on You-tube , giv’em a listen ! The lyrics and song structure are unique , with breaks , dynamics , good singing and leads that all work well together ! The band has only been together for a few months but the common thread is that they realize the potential that is possible . The trick is to keep the band together ! They are unified in that effort ! I hope they can find a chance to come to Poteau and show their stuff !

After a couple of tries they got the band members info to me . The telephone interview that I forgot to turn my recorder on , the written info the was in a format that I couldn’t handle , I think Tyler was bout ready to snail mail it to me . Heck I can just barely use the tv remote . But I finally gathered it up . Sitting and writing while listening to their songs , I’m getting a feel of the passion in their music . Good Stuff !

Anyway a lil’ bout the band ! Three outta four hail from Pocola . Tyler Smith/guitar/singer/songwriter says he is first and foremost a family man ! His wife and two young’ens are his biggest fans . He has been playing for 19 yrs . Like most of us , he started in church . Playing several bands with diff styles – Metal , Southern Rock , Classic Rock , Blues and Country ! A combination that leads to the BSB sound . Or in his words ,”We play more of a Red Dirt sound and heavy Country . Some stuff that the younger generation enjoy . We are excited to see where this journey takes us” ! The band has an “Outlaw Country” that I grew up playing ! Ya know Waylon , Willie , Hank Jr. !

Corey Edwards/guitar/singer handles the rhythm and adds to the high energy that makes BSB exciting ! Been playing as long as he can remember and he realizes how special this band is and what potential lies ahead . Sometimes musicians just click ! He adds a lot to the trio and his solid playing gives the others a lotta room to work their stuff . Red Dirt style – Cody Jinks , Whiskey Meyers kinda music . He is hopeful for the band and says “I would like to see this area grow the music dept “! And BSB will definitely breathe new life into the music scene !

It’s all about the bass! Sydney McCoy is solid and strong ! He ain’t bashful and handles the bass lines with confidence . I like his style . He compliments the song , works well with the energy of the music and knows when to lay back for the vocals ! He feels the music and just can’t stand still . It makes for a great show for outside events and dances ! He is from across the River – Sallisaw native . His Dad played round the area , his favorite was Knee Deep ! “I wanna play music that folks can relate to and enjoy ! That’s what it’s all about” !

Good drummers are hard to find and Tyler Slaughter is just that – Good ! Strong and steady . Great timekeeper and Play well with the others . It makes for interesting songs , clean breaks and dynamics that let the lyrics tell the story ! Learning percussion in the High School band , he has the basics and ain’t afraid to use them . Lotta fire in his playing and soul in the slow tunes , a good combination ! He says “I am grateful to have the guys and all their differences come together to make some really good music !

Got to hear Backsliders Wine and Grannie’s Nightmare at the Coffee Cup last Sat. ! The benefit went well . But the miracle of the day is how well Randy Smith is doing ! He’ll tell you that all the prayer has given his health a BIG boost and will let him sing for a while longer ! Prayer works , try it !

Live Music – 10-2 Grannie’s Nightmare will be Rocking at Shooter’s Bar and Grill .

Lots more in October ! Musicians ReUnion 2 in the Pocket Park ! Oktoberfest in the PP . The Poteau Balloon Fest has LIve Music again ! Wright family singing AND MUCH MORE !
