Alonso-Sandoval bill to allow inclusion of blood type on identification advances

OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval, D-Oklahoma City, passed HB 4058 out of the House Public Safety Committee. The bill directs Service Oklahoma to allow an applicant for either a driver’s license or ID the option of including their blood type on their card in order to speed up medical response.

“This measure has the potential to save lives and ensure that victims of car crashes and other horrific events can receive the care they need as quickly as possible,” said Rep. Alonso-Sandoval. “While completely optional, this bill could provide faster medical response in critical scenarios. Oklahomans deserve every opportunity to stay safe, and this bill is one way to ensure that.”

This bill is designed to help boost awareness about an individual’s blood type as Oklahoma faces a critical need for blood donations. Bills such as this are proven to boost blood donations and save lives.

The measure is not anticipated to have a direct fiscal impact on the state budget or appropriations.

The bill now heads to the House Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety Oversight.
