OKLAHOMA CITY – House Rep. Arturo Alonso-Sandoval was chosen as one of 60 leaders to be a part of the Southern Regional Education Board Commission on Artificial Intelligence in Education.
The SREB Commission on AI in Education consists of 60 policymakers, education leaders, and business executives from 16 states.
Alonso-Sandoval has authored a couple bills about artificial intelligence, HB 3825 and HB 3828. Both bills are aimed at increasing transparency when it comes to the adoption of AI.
“I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the inaugural Southern Region Education Boards Commission on Artificial Intelligence in Education,” Alonso-Sandoval said. “As a commission, we had great discussions about developing AI literacy curricula, providing AI training for teachers, and setting guidelines around appropriate AI use in schools. Integrating these powerful technologies also raised many important questions around privacy, ethical use, and ensuring all students have access to the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world. I am excited to continue meeting with this group to embrace AI technologies to prepare both teachers and students with the skills they need to succeed as technology becomes more prominent in their schools.”
According to the SREB, the commission works to chart a course on how AI is used in the classroom and in the workforce.
“Once again, we find education needing to evolve to new technology while meeting the needs of a future workforce,” SREB President Stephen Pruitt said in an article announcing the commission members. “We are excited to have this opportunity to work with individuals across sectors to provide guidance and recommendations on the use, possibilities and issues around AI in K-12 and postsecondary education.”
The commission held its first meeting on April 30, 2024.
