OKLAHOMA CITY – Today, HB 1946 authored by Rep. Michelle McCane, D-Tulsa, failed in Common Education with a 5, 6 bipartisan vote. The bill prohibits a school district from contracting with a certified teacher for less than one year unless that teacher was hired after the school year began to prevent school districts from using semester contracts for teachers that start at the beginning of the year.

“While we did not get this legislation through committee today, I am encouraged by the bipartisan support seen in committee for this bill and appreciate the Common Education Committee for hearing it,” McCane. “I look forward to continuing my work with committee members on this bill and to keep bringing the voices of Oklahoma public school teachers to the Capitol. I urge public school teachers and districts to reach out to my office to share thoughts on this bill or their experience with shorter contracts.”
