We had a couple of great days at the Capitol last week.

First, we had Main Street Day. Main Street groups from across the state set up tables in the Second Floor Rotunda to give us a glimpse of what each community has to offer in terms of local businesses, tourist destinations and events.

I got to visit with Wilburton’s new mayor, Loran Mayes, as well as the director of our Wilburton Main Street Association, Amanda Byers. These two women have a lot of passion for making my hometown the best place it can be. It was a treat to get to see their promotion of our great city.

We also had 4-H Day at the Capitol. 4-H members from all across the state visited. Their distinctive green shirts were everywhere. I got to meet with Brileigh Hulsey and Wyatt Ward who attend Wilburton Schools. I’m always happy to see our next generation interested and learning about their state government and sharing their ideas for how to improve our state.

4-H has long been a great organization to help our kids develop leadership skills and to learn by doing. They also have phenomenal agriculture education programs. Part of their stated mission is “developing young people who are empowered, confident, hard-working, determined, responsible and compassionate—seeing a world beyond themselves so that they have the life-long skills to succeed in college and career.” What’s not to love about that?

This week is our committee deadline week for bills from the opposite chamber. All Senate bills, except those that will be heard in our Appropriations & Budget Committee, have to pass by April 13 in order to be heard on the House floor. A&B bills have until April 19 to pass.

After this week, we’ll have several busy weeks of voting on Senate bills on the House floor. At the same time, House members are working with their Senate counterparts to get House bills passed in that chamber.

Things have been a bit frosty between House and Senate leadership as we continue to work on our education plan. The House version of the plan will give more funding to our rural schools and will better serve the needs of students in our House district. I’m hopeful we’ll get something worked out soon.

As always, thank You for allowing me to serve you. I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
