Week two of committee hearings for Senate bills is moving at a rather slow pace, Even so, many Senate bills are advancing their way through our House committees. My House Bill 3749 is working its way through the committee process on the Senate side. This bill would fund the rebuilding of the prison rodeo grounds so this time-honored tradition may resume.
Last week, I attended the Oklahoma FFA Legislative Banquet. This highlighted many of the FFA accomplishments of students. This is one program in our schools that I hope will never go away even as we tend to turn into a more urban state. Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat gave a very personal accounting of his family and the FFA family stepping up in his hour of need, but I believe this is indicative of our FFA chapters across this state. Another fun fact I learned this week is that Enid Public Schools is in the process of establishing its first FFA chapter. I would have assumed this was done many years ago, but better late than never.
This next Monday is the great solar eclipse, and many thousands of people are expected to descend upon Southeast Oklahoma as it is in the path of totality. Hopefully, the predictions of what all can go wrong will prove to be false and all will enjoy this rare event safely. I do know our state parks are fully booked, so our area will be reaping many economic benefits. Hopefully, many of these tourists will see what we have to offer and return.
