This week, the focus seems to be on education funding. In February, the House passed House Bills 2775 and 1935, which was our proposal to give tax credits to parents who want educational choices for their children, but that also built in teacher pay raises with additional funding so local public schools could increase support personnel if they so desired. My belief was that we checked all the boxes. Unfortunately, the Senate didn’t agree with our proposals and made several significant amendments that would result in less funding for our local public schools. The House version will better serve our rural schools in our House district. These bills will likely be further amended before they pass the House again.
This weekend is alumni weekend in Wilburton. This is the 108th as these have been going on since 1915. I doubt many schools can rival this record. It’s hard to believe I will be celebrating my 50th reunion. Time sure does fly when you’re having fun. I’m looking forward to seeing many of my classmates from the class of ’73.
On a final note, I want to recognize this is Holy Week, the week that my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ took his final steps toward the cross. The fact that Jesus – God Himself – left heaven and came down here to earth to live as a man, never sinning, so that He could die in our place so we could be redeemed is just almost beyond what I can imagine. I’m so thankful for His sacrifice. While the picture of His brutal death on Good Friday is agonizing, the knowledge of His resurrection on Easter Sunday and what that means for us is beyond joyful! He takes away the sting of death and promises an eternal life of blessings in His presence. That is good news! So Happy Easter to all who celebrate it!
