The “dog days” of summer are upon us full force along with a drought that won’t seem to quit. We’re also kind of in the “dog days” of our legislative session. Interim studies have started, and this sets the stage for legislative policy for the upcoming year. I am co-chairing an interim study with Rep. Pogemiller on the dangers of Kratom. Products with Kratom are sold over the counter at many gas stations and convenience stores. The concern is these may be more dangerous than we once believed. Many people have lit up my phone wanting to come to this study to share their personal experience. It should be very informative.
Studies this week included one on advanced primary and value-based healthcare. It’s known that patients who meet more often with their primary care physicians and get more preventative care have improved health. Even better is when a team, including the doctor, pharmacist, any specialists or mental healthcare professionals or others can work together for the patient. But we have to have data that proves to insurers and providers that this approach works in improving healthcare outcomes and will save money.
I recently attended Eastern Oklahoma State College’s second annual honors dinner. This dinner brings together high school students who are unsure about their college choice and allows them to mix and meet alumni who share their stories and experiences at Eastern. I always enjoy sharing my Eastern past history, giving them credit for a solid foundation that I was able to build upon. After I give my spiel about how Eastern helped me academically, I always like to mention that Eastern is also the place I met my wife of 47 years. So, I tell them anything is possible.
