Voting in the 2026 midterm has begun as I write this. I really don’t expect any surprises on the state level, but I have concerns about the national vote. We will know as the dust settles in the next few days, and the votes are certified. One aspect I do agree with is the Oklahoma Attorney General’s ruling that our next Senator will be seated as soon as the votes are certified.

Seniority is such a deciding factor in politics at all levels, and our freshman Senator from Oklahoma will have several weeks of seniority over the new incoming senators who will take office in January.

I also will comment that when you read this, many new members in the Oklahoma House of Representatives will have been elected to serve in the 61st Legislature. Several members of our body have reached their 12-year term limit, and many who chose to seek higher office will not be returning.

New and current House members will gather at the Capitol on Nov. 17 for Swearing-In Day, when they will take the oath of office for the 61st Legislature.

Serving in the Legislature is similar to high school, as you start out as a freshman and end up a senior, except it is spread out over many more years.  It is always exciting to start the new session, and I am looking forward to this.

Otherwise, at 23rd and Lincoln, it is mostly quiet as some members are shuffling offices. I plan to remain in my office on the north side of the Capitol’s second floor.

Bill filing will begin will also begin shortly, with Dec. 4 as the Bill Request Deadline.  This year, I have several pieces of proposed legislation I will be tending to.

As always, thank you for allowing me to serve. If you have any questions, please reach out to me. You can email me at Jim.Grego@okhouse.gov or call my office at (405) 557-7381.

Rep. Jim Grego, a Republican, represents House District 17, which includes Latimer and Pittsburg counties.
