“Real ID or not to be” seems to be the buzzword of late. Even before I was elected to serve four years ago, Real ID was an issue kicked down the road from the federal government and imposed on the states to be compliant. The latest deadline was to be early 2023, but now I understand this date has been pushed back an additional two years. I really struggle to understand its importance in many cases such as my own. I was issued a state driver’s license over 50 years ago. Nothing on it has really changed other than my weight, so I don’t understand why I have to go back and prove my identity.
I was able to attend McAlester’s Library fundraiser gala this past week. McAlester’s Library is in dire need of remodeling. The goal is to raise this money in private funds. I made a request for some American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to complete this fundraiser, but to no avail. I am confident this group will get the funds and make this project happen.
Friday, Dec. 9, is the deadline for legislators to request drafting of bills and joint resolutions. Members then work with legal staff throughout the month of December to draft substantive language for each piece of legislation, which must be formally filed by Jan. 19. In future columns I will detail some of my legislation.
Finally, this week, how about the McAlester Buffalo Football Team? They made an excellent run at the state championship but unfortunately came up short. I am proud of this group and all they have accomplished. Go Buffs!
As always, thank you for allowing me to serve you. It is a true pleasure. If there is ever anything I can do for you, I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
