I hear this verse often quoted when Christmas gets close, but this year looking it up, it struck me that it was written long before the child Jesus was actually born. That’s pretty amazing. Being an elected government official, I also can’t get past that phrase that the government is on His shoulder, not mine. I admit, I sometimes forget, and I take that burden on myself.
But still the promise that a Son of God would be given to the world, and “of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.”
Now, there’s a comforting thought. This Oklahoma government sure won’t last forever. Nor will our national government in D.C. But for those of us who put our hope in God and in His son Jesus, we have a promise of a government that will last through eternity. And His government is founded on justice and mercy.
When Jesus was born, the shepherds were told by the angels that they were bringing good tidings of great joy for all people. God was favoring mankind with His presence and with peace on earth and goodwill toward men. Now, that’s some good news to carry with us as we approach Christmas.
Enjoy all the food and the presents and visiting with family and friends, but most of all be thankful for this best gift of God’s Son and the peace and goodwill He brings to our lives when we welcome Him.
Merry Christmas to all, and may you have a very happy New Year.
