House Bill 2914 – looks like we might have gotten this one right. This gives our local sheriffs’ departments additional funding. In rural Oklahoma, the sheriff’s department is our first line of defense, and I am proud to support them. Pittsburg County is receiving $300,000 while Larimer County is receiving $150,000. Thanks to all our legislators for making this happen.

I am honored to have been chosen as chairman of the Appropriations & Budget Natural Resources Subcommittee. I have been a member of this committee for the past six years. We hear the budget requests for all the natural resources’ agencies. These include the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, and the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department, along with several others. These all are agencies near and dear to me, and I appreciate Speaker Hilbert’s trust in me. This also allows me a seat on the full Appropriations & Budget Committee, which has been a goal of mine since I was elected, to take a more active role in our state budget.

Property taxes are due this week or as some have referenced them, “Prosperity Taxes.” In my mind, this system of taxation is unfair. This tax increases every year due to your property becoming more valuable, which explains the reason so many entities would prefer to cash in on our property taxes rather than other forms of taxation. One thing we cannot allow is to shift the majority of state funding to the property owners as our neighbors to the south have done.

On a final note, I’m hopping everyone made it through the holidays, and I’m hoping 2025 will be the best year ever.

As always, thank You for allowing me to serve you. I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
