By Rep. Jim Grego

Week four is quickly upon us with bills that have advanced through their initial policy committees now being eligible to be heard in oversight committees. Our schedule is somewhat compressed due to the weather closures last week. Six of my bills advanced through subcommittee hearings. These include HB1126, my fake meat labeling bill, and HB1408, which has to do with graduation rates for our public schools. Both these bills now are scheduled to be heard in oversight committees this week. This leaves me to work with committees to get my remaining fours bills heard before the March 6 deadline.

Not much else is progressing to the floor this week as we await more bills passing the oversight committees before they are eligible to be heard on the House floor.

I had a visit from the Youth Action for Health Leadership this week. This is a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust. A couple of high school students stopped by, and we visited about tobacco usage in our schools. I was disappointed to learn that smoking is still a real problem in our public schools. I guess I had just assumed that with decades of educations against this it would eventually go away. Now I’m not so sure.

Titus Montgomery, a Red Oak High School graduate, was back at the capital this week promoting the vocational agriculture programs. Titus was a page of mine a couple of years ago, and it is good to see that he is still very active in promoting agriculture in this state. I enjoy watching our youth as they progress in their respective fields and ultimate careers.
