Special session, or was it? As I write this, the Senate has already adjourned to “a call of the chair.” I’m anticipating the House will pass legislation to lower the state income tax burden by ¼ of one percent. With both chambers technically still in special session, my hope is the Senate will reconvene in late February and pass legislation we have sent over. We will see.
Monday, Feb. 5, we convene in regular session to finish the second half of the 59th Legislature. Gov. Stitt will address both chambers with his “State of the State” address in which he will outline his vision for the upcoming session. As I have previously stated, I feel our governor is making strides to improve his relationship with legislators, so hopefully this second half will be productive.
Once session starts, we’ll start committee meetings to hear bills before they advance to the House floor. It takes a few weeks to get through the committee process, but then things will start picking up.
My office is again hearing from constitutes who are having difficulties with insurance companies. It seems if you’re insured and you file a claim or two, the insurance companies are not wanting to renew your policy. It just doesn’t seem right that the insurance companies only want to insure anyone one who doesn’t file claims. As always, we relay these concerns to the state Insurance Department, and they remind us that insurance companies are under no obligation to insure anyone.
