The Senate met in special session Monday to override the governor’s veto on bills that will extend tribal compacts on tobacco and motor vehicle taxes. The House already took similar action on one of these bills, so it is now law. We are scheduled to return next week to take final action on the Senate bill.
I want to stress that this just gives the tribes one more year to negotiate with the governor. It doesn’t take away any of his power. I’m already hearing some conversations are being had. I’m hopeful this matter can be resolved to the best interest of everyone involved.
This past week, I attended the monthly meeting of AARP, providing them an update on legislative actions of this past year. We had some really good questions and answers. It is always fun to visit with local groups like this as we try to keep them engaged in our political process.
Finally, I wish to commend the organizers and volunteers who put together the “Dancing Rabbit Music Festival” in downtown McAlester. This was an outstanding show that brought thousands of visitors to downtown. This in my opinion is what economic growth is about, bring the people in and show them what you have to offer. What better way than with music?
