Grass roots involvement seems to be the talk of the town this week. I recently attended two separate but similar events with this being the main theme.
Oklahoma Farm Bureau held its annual convention this past weekend. This is where, among other things, public policy is determined for the next year. This process starts on the county level where resolutions are presented to be considered at the state level. These resolutions are sifted by the resolution committee with the end result being nearly 100 policy items to be discussed on the convention floor. Most pass through with no discussion, but several where discussed and debated openly. The resolutions that pass off the floor will then be incorporated into next year’s policy book. One resolution that originated in Latimer County pertaining to excise tax cleared the floor with no discussion.
Oklahoma Cattleman’s Association is in the middle of hosting its area meetings across the state. OCA leadership are present and hold open discussions with members about items members consider important to them. OCA will have a “policy meeting” in Oklahoma City this January where they screen the 3,000 or so bills that have been introduced for the next legislative session and determine which bills they will support and also which bills they will try to defeat.
Both processes rely on membership input. I encourage everyone to become involved in some type of organized effort to magnify your voice to steer public policy.
Last week I reported that we would dedicate the “Anthony Botello” bridge on Friday, Nov. 8. This dedication got pushed back due to inclement weather. At 10 a.m. this Friday, Nov. 15, we will dedicate this bridge in Anthony’s memory. He paid the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms. I hope many will attend in support for this great and noble young man.
