Marine Lance Corporal Anthony David Botello will forever be in our memory with the naming of a bridge west of Wilburton. Anthony Botello’s life was shortened by a sniper’s round while on patrol in the Somali Capital of Mogadishu, on January 26, 1993. Anthony’s mother Caroline Clunn had reached out to me about the possibility of this several months ago. It saddens me to think about the vibrant 21-year-old losing his life in preservation of the freedoms we all take for granted. It was a bittersweet moment at the bridge as I visited with his family about the young man who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
This Tuesday, the House Republican Caucus convened in advance of the first session of the 60th Legislature. We voted on several caucus rule changes, which is customary at the start of each new Legislature. We voted to drop the “elect” from Speaker Kyle Hilbert’s title. I believe Hilbert may be the youngest Speaker of The House to date. With Hilbert’s extensive knowledge of the legislative process, I’m ready to work with him on many pressing issues. I also look forward to watching this young man’s career path even after he is no longer “Speaker.” I expect great things from him.
This Wednesday, I will take my oath of office to serve in the 60th Legislature for the great state of Oklahoma. This will begin my seventh year of service. My how time flies when you’re having fun. When I began this journey, I had a feeling of being overwhelmed at the wide array of subject material we were expected to know. Now, six years later, I am still overwhelmed, but now I believe I know where to look for the resources necessary to meet the level of expectation of my constituents.
As always, thank You for allowing me to serve you. I can be reached at (405) 557-7381 or by email at jim.grego@okhouse.gov.
