Fall is in the air, with cooler nights but still very warm days. October is upon us.
October also brings interim studies at the Capitol into full swing as they must be completed by Nov. 8. I will be attending one this week on solid waste management, as well as several next week being heard in the House Transportation Committee. My interim study looking at how the state computes vehicles values for excise taxation is scheduled to be heard Oct. 23.
Interim studies give lawmakers the opportunity to take a deep dive look into a topic that may become future legislation. It's a good time to hear all sides of an issue so we can determine if there will be any unintended consequences.
Other than interim studies, there really is not much happening at the Capitol in this final month before the election. After Nov. 5, we'll be swearing in new members and starting to file our bills for the next session.
Tourism Director Shelly Zumwalt announced she will be retiring from government service this month. Director Zumwalt led tourism through a very tumulus time, with the resignation of the previous director and all the ramifications of the Swadley's contract problems. In my opinion, Director Zumwalt left tourism and our state parks in a much better place than when she took over at the helm. I wish her the best as she reenters the private business world.
Finally please remember to keep Governor Stitt in your thoughts and prayers as he underwent a heart procedure recently. Seems he’s back on the job and everything is great but it always reminds us that we need to be heart healthy and aware.
