October continues at a rapid pace as we work our way up to the beginning of the First Session of the 60th Legislature, which starts in early February. With 100-plus interim studies being conducted, it seems there are numerous ones being held on any given October day at the Capitol. I did attend a House Transportation Committee study on “rural two-lane roads.” Who would have thought we even have such a thing, much less so many miles with no shoulders. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation assures us these are a priority, but as I drive around House District 17. I fail to see much evidence of this being a reality.

The recent Latimer County Cattlemen’s annual meeting had what I would consider a record turnout. I enjoyed having the chance to visit with so many constituents. This will be followed up with the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s southeast area meeting in early November, then the Oklahoma’s Cattlemen’s annual policy meeting in February.  I have stated many times, if you want to get involved in policy decisions, these grassroots organizations are what I would consider to be the best way forward.

Two state questions are on the November ballot. I have fielded numerous questions about both as there seems to be little promotion either way.

State Question 833 deals with forming public improvement districts for new infrastructure. These would allow cities and towns of any size way to finance these projects through the sale of bonds to benefit a specific development. One question to ask when bonds are sold is should the area dissolve, would the county be held liable.

State Question 834 deals with requiring that only citizens of the United States are eligible to vote.

I advise everyone to do their homework as much information on both questions is available.

Finally, for the good news: this weekend is Fall Festival at Robber’s Cave State Park. This is our chance to “shine” as tens of thousands of visitors descend upon Latimer County. Whatever your reason for attending may be, there will be something for you to enjoy.
