Jim Grego serves District 17 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. His district includes Latimer County and parts of LeFlore and Pittsburg counties.
I attended a very interesting interim study this week looking at alternative funding sources for our highway and roads fund. Everyone believes the reason this fund is shrinking is because of electric vehicles (EVs), but the fact is actually that hybrids and other vehicles simply get far better gas mileage than they used to. So, no matter how hard the federal government tries to push EVs on us, it doesn’t seem to be working. It is estimated that we have approximately 61,000 EVs in Oklahoma.
Last week, I met with the Pittsburg County AARP chapter. We had some very good discussions on current policies and politics. We did not agree on many items, but we did keep the discussions civil with both sides respecting the other’s view. This is how politics is supposed to work, and I look forward to meeting with them again.
At the Capitol, we’ll keep hearing interim studies through early November, and of course we’re gearing up for the changing of the guard after the general election is held. Non-returning legislative members will be in office until Nov. 19; new members will be sworn in Nov. 20
In closing, I attended the Robber’s Cave Fall Festival this past weekend. What amazed me was the fact that just recently it was announced there would be no “Fall Festival” this year. Many people stepped up and said not so fast. This festival did not go off without some problems, but all in all I would believe it was a great success. I appreciated the fact that Interim Director of Tourism Sterling Zearley was out there helping in any way he could.
